No. 9, Enthroned

This montage combines Marko Djurica's portraits of a Green Man with Study after Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X (1953) by Francis Bacon, which is appropriated from Diego Velazquez's Pope Innocent X (1650). Bacon's version places the figure within a ‘space frame’ used by the Surreal artist, Alberto Giacometti, to symbolize psychological entrapment and angst. In the Green Men, the masked visage of the eastern Ukrainian separatist assumes the facial expression of the figure's horrific scream in Bacon's painting.
